Description

Kroll’s Reagent (AKA Kroll’s etch) is the most popular metallographic etchant for etching titanium alloys. It reveals the structural details, and with certain titanium alloys will reveal grain boundaries. The primary alpha structure of titanium will appear white after etching. Alpha prime and acicular alpha structures will be outlined. Intergranular beta structure and beta grains will be darkened. This product is made with ACS reagent grade hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid. The formula is listed in ASTM Standard E407 as number 192 “Kroll’s”.

User Instructions:

  • Warning! This product contains a small amount of HF (hydrofluoric acid). HF is a contact poison. Please wear protective gear. Seek medical attention immediately if it gets on the skin. HF will attack glasswares, please use a plastic container to transfer this liquid.
  • Mirror polish the sample with colloidal silica for 10+ minutes before etching.
  • Swab the sample with this etchant for 3-10 seconds or immerse 10-30 seconds.
