Below are common forensic investigation etchants for serial number restoration of firearms. They are known to produce good contrast for mark recovery. However, it could take more than an hour to get a readable result. Please note that these products only work with stamped serial numbers on carbon steel parts, they will not raise the serial number on a cast-iron engine block. Professional products, no instructions will be provided.
Macro Fry’s Reagent
- This is the standard reagent for forensic studies, stronger than our regular Fry’s reagent for metallography.
- This is a diluted nitric acid solution. Usually used in conjunction with Macro Fry’s. Water-based.
ASTM 36 Ferric Chloride Etch
- An alternative to Macro Fry’s. It can be used by itself.
