Barker’s Reagent, 500 mL

$215.54

Description

Barker’s reagent is a diluted fluoroboric acid solution commonly used as an electrolyte for etching aluminum alloys. It will reveal the grain structure of pure aluminum, 1000, 3000, 5000, 6000, and 7000 series alloys under polarized light. Utilizing this product requires electrolytic etching equipment, and it is essential to ensure your microscope is equipped with cross-polarization light filters before making a purchase.

User Instructions:

  1. Mirror-polish the aluminum sample before etching.
  2. Use an aluminum or stainless steel cathode (-), and connect the sample to the anode (+). See this schematic diagram for reference.
  3. Anodize the aluminum sample using 20 to 45V DC for 1 to 3 minutes. At 20V, the etching time is approximately 60 to 90 seconds.
  4. Observe the result using a metallurgical microscope with polarized light filters (cross-polarization). Close the field diaphragm on the light path of the microscope slightly to enhance the contrast. Some literature suggests adding an optional quarter wavelength filter (a purple-colored sensitive tint) to the polarizer for contrast enhancement.
