Barker’s Reagent, 500 mL
Barker’s reagent is a diluted fluoroboric acid solution. It is an electrolyte for etching aluminum alloys. It will show the grain structure of pure aluminum, 1000, 3000, 5000, 6000, and 7000 series alloys under the polarized light. This product requires the use of electrolytic etching equipment. Please also make sure your microscope has polarized light filters before purchase. The formula is listed in ASTM standard E407 as number 5.

- Mirror-polish the aluminum sample.
- Use aluminum or stainless steel cathode (-), the sample is the anode (+). See this schematic diagram for reference.
- Anodize the aluminum sample using 20 to 45V DC for 1 to 3 minutes. At 20V, the etching time is approximately 60 to 90 seconds.
- Observe the result using the polarized light (crossed polarizers). Close the field diaphragm of the microscope will enhance the contrast. For better results, add a quarter wavelength filter (sensitive tint) to the polarizer.
